Special Programs

Several special programs help the Baby Corner carry out its mission.

Car Seats and Portacribs

Through an arrangement with a major manufacturer of baby equipment, the Baby Corner purchases car seats and portacribs at a deep discount. Three dozen are ordered at a time, several times per year. Unlike other car-seat programs, the Baby Corner distributes brand-new car seats at no charge. In 2007, the Baby Corner distributed more than 800 car seats and portacribs combined.

Crib Communities and Giving Trees

The Baby Corner is supported not only by individuals but also by communities whose members set up a crib or sponsor a holiday Giving Tree to collect donated baby goods. These communities provide the Baby Corner with a regular stream of in-kind donations throughout the year.

Spanish-Language and Bilingual Books

In August 2000, the Baby Corner began purchasing board books and picture books for infants and toddlers. To date, more than 2,500 books have been distributed through service providers. The Baby Corner believes that books are a necessity because of the important role they play in language acquisition, parent-child bonding, and cognitive development.

Monroe Quilters

Each month nearly a dozen colorful crib-size baby quilts arrive at our doorstep from the Twin Rivers Unit at Monroe Correctional Complex. Quilting is one of the many programs overseen by the prison’s Community Aid Coalition; the men in these programs support outside organizations and charities through fundraisers and by donating handcrafted items.

Flee Bags

The Baby Corner collects clean backpacks and tote bags, then stuffs them with hand soap, toothpaste, new underwear, and other overnight necessities for women. The bags are given to moms with young children who are fleeing domestic violence.

Layettes

Since 1990, a group of dedicated women from a church in Bothell have been making layettes for newborns and delivering them regularly to the Baby Corner. Inside each handmade diaper bag is everything a newborn needs for the first days at home: diapers and wipes, clothing, sleepers, T-shirts, blankets, pacifiers, bottles, rattles, and a toy or two.
